President Obama on Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy Floods Homes

Yesterday President Obama stated that they are working with FEMA to get aid to people as quickly as possible.  He urged everyone to listen to state and local officials and evacuate when told to do so.  He reminded all that those who do not evacuate when asked are putting emergency personnel lives at danger.  He also said that transportation and power are going to be down for a while, as it will take time to get things back in order.  For additional preparation and guidance throughout this particular storm check out the official government website on national preparedness at  Most importantly he noted that working together would help us get through the disaster faster.

Today in another address on hurricane Sandy he asked that the public monitor the conditions and follow instructions given by officials.  He said that the better-prepared individual families are the easier it will be for them to deal with it.  What we do as a community and as neighbors is equally important as government aid.  Since government aid is swamped, he asks that people check on their neighbors to make sure that they are okay.  Also, people not affected by the hurricane need to show their generosity by contributing to the Red Cross.  This will help tremendously by getting help to others who have been hit hard by the hurricane.  He closed his statement by encouraging everyone to sustain spirit of resilience until everybody is back on their feet.

According to FEMA, as of October 8, 2011 they had a total of 7,272 employees working for them across the country.  For hurricane Sandy, only a little over 1,000 employees were able to reach the affected areas to show aid.  This means that individual families must not depend on government aid for disaster situations like Hurricane Sandy or Katrina.  It is crucial that each family is prepared ahead of time with supplies and a sound evacuation plan in order to survive.  Being prepared on your own can help save not only your lives but also the lives of rescue workers and even neighbors.  Please take time now to reach out and help those who are in need at this time.  In addition, start thinking of how to prepare your own family for similar situations in the future.
