Why You Want to Pack as Many Plastic Baggies as Possible
Plastic baggies are an example of things that you absolutely need packed away in your survival kit or bug out bag. They have a million-and-one different uses, and it doesn’t take a lot of imagination to think of how they can be of use to you when you need to rely on your supplies during a crisis. Let’s look at a couple of ways that you can incorporate baggies into your planning now and enjoy some additional benefits as well.
Repackaging
One way to not only ensure that you have enough baggies on hand, but to cut down on wasted space or bulk at the same time, is to re-package items. This is a particularly useful trick if you are packing a bug out bag and want to conserve as much space as possible. Go through your supplies, and see what items can be taken out of their packaging and placed into baggies instead. You’ll be surprised at how much space little boxes or odd-shaped packaging takes up.
Combining Items
You can also combine different items in order to conserve space as well. However, try and think about how and when items will be used. That way you can combine those items together and have easy access to them as needed. The same applies for items that you won’t be using that much. These can be combined and stuffed in out-of-the-way places until you need them.
Food Storage
You will be able to store a lot more food, in less space, if you place them in baggies instead of other containers. This is a great way to grab some items from your stockpile and place them in your bug out bag. You can portion them as needed, and combine items into larger bags in order to make meals more accessible in the field. You can also use baggies to store a lot of different items in your stockpile at home or shelter as well.
Why Baggies
When bugging-out or being in a wilderness survival situation, baggies give you something to carry things with. They also have a seal that can keep items from leaking or spilling. Baggies can also be used to store anything from leftover food to protecting your toothbrush. You can collect and store different items, haul bait, protect matches and fire-starters, or you can also make homemade hot or cold packs with them.
The possibilities or endless, and chances are that you will stumble on uses that you didn’t even think about until you’re in the heat of the moment. By repackaging items, you not only avoid forgetting to pack the baggies while ensuring that you have a supply on hand. Unfortunately, baggies are often the last thing that a lot of people think about as they’re putting their survival gear together, even thought they have so many practical benefits.
Our advice? Pack some away now, because you’ll be glad you did later, and they can go a long way to make life easier in the field during a crisis.
