Being prepared for survival encompasses a lot more than just having the proper gear and equipment. You have to have a sound plan so that you do not panic and know what to do in each type of situation. You should know how and when to use the tools that you have. You also need to have a support system made up of people from your community that you can go to. However, one of the most important aspects of being able to survive is being physically fit. No matter how much equipment you have or whom you know, this will not save you in circumstance where you alone have to escape from. This is why it is important to get in physical shape now, in times of peace and stability.
Why stay physically fit? If you are faced with a situation where you have to escape a fire, you have to run. If you have to move a heavy object blocking your way from earthquake debris, you have to use your strength. If you have to pull your partner up for safety, you need power. If you need to get to higher ground to escape a tsunami you have to use your strength and endurance to quickly reach your destination. There are many situations and instances where you actually will need to put in some elbow grease to get you and your loved ones to safety.
Another important fact to note is that survival gear with food and water is usually very heavy, some as heavy as 40-50lbs. You need to be able to carry your bug out kit and your kids, if you have any, and still manage to escape. Luckily, some kits come with rollers so that you do not have to carry it on your back all the time. However, even the ones with rollers you will still have to lift at times so you must be prepared to do that when it is necessary.
If you are not in physical shape now, it is time for you to start preparing yourself physically so that you can concentrate on the real problems mentally when it is time to do so. Start out slow at first and begin walking. Then start running routines and eventually go hiking so that you can get a sense of the wilderness. Ride a bike, you will feel young and get in shape at the same time. Lifting weights and doing upper body strengthening exercises is very important because it will come in handy when you need to push or pull and lift.
