Sonic Snake and Rodent Repellents: Technology to the Rescue?
I recently met someone who is deathly-afraid of mice, and they are not particularly fond of snakes either. Unfortunately, they live in an area where both are commonly found in backyards and gardens during the summer. They’ve tried many tips and tricks, set traps and used a host of natural repellents with varying degrees of success. However, once they placed these solar powered, vibrating stakes into the ground, the snakes and mice disappeared and haven’t been seen since.
Too Good to be True?
Is this a miracle solution for a problem that is hard to deal with? Maybe. Will it work for everyone? Probably not. However, the fact that these gadgets actually seem to be doing what they advertise, life on their homestead has gotten a lot easier and a lot more stress-free.
This calls attention to the potential value of using technology and innovation as tools on our quest to become more self-reliant. Most homesteaders have at least one pest or vermin problem that doesn’t seem to go away despite various attempts to keep it under control. However, if some of these gadgets can get the job done without costing a fortune or being too disruptive, then they are definitely worth the investment.
Try First
The concern is that if these devices fail when they are needed the most, and you’re not in a position to replace them, then you’re out of luck. It’s also easy to order products that seem legit and effective, only to find out they are not as good as promised. Consequently, it’s important to be judicious and willing to experiment before you end up relying on them.
The reason we bring this up as while we spend a lot of time discussing ways to become self-reliant by improvising or accumulating and utilizing basic resources, we shouldn’t completely turn our back on innovation either. There are many ways that technology can make life off-the-grid a lot easier and allow us to tackle problems or finish projects in a timely and efficient manner.
Use Innovation Judiciously
The trick is to strike the right balance between products and other alternatives that can be cobbled together with a little bit of ingenuity and resourcefulness. We should never replace the practice of developing skills for the sake of convenience as those tools could be rendered useless with little or no warning. However, with a little balance, trial-and-error and good planing, you can find numerous ways to incorporate technology into your preparedness efforts.
This can apply to almost any aspect of survival or SHTF preparation. As more people feel the need to start preparing for an uncertain future, more products are emerging on the market to make the process more efficient. Take advantage of them whenever possible, but make sure that you are familiar with other alternatives and can fall back on them if things don’t work out.
I’ll be the first to admit that I was skeptical when I first heard about these repellent-stakes. However, I also appreciate the difference they made in dealing with the problem at hand, and this was an important lesson to learn. What kinds of gadgets have you come across lately that may have some value? Feel free to share some of your experiences, so we can all benefit from taking advantage of tools that actually work.
