Some Farmers Are Shunning Genetically Modified Seeds

FarmerCorn

Some Midwestern farmers have gone back to planting crops with natural seeds instead of ones that have been optimized to boost productivity. This is good news for those who believe that the potential risks outweigh the benefits of growing crops with feedstock that is not completely natural. This small turn of events adds to the growing concern around the world that genetically modified seeds may not be as promising as they were originally thought.

Optimized seeds are designed to resist anything from insect infestation to creating more robust crops that can withstand harsh weather conditions. The goal was to create crops that produced better yields for lower prices. However, a considerable amount of debate quickly ensued with respect to whether or not these products were truly safe for human consumption. Farmers were led to believe that using altered seeds would help to reduce expenses, improve profits and boost harvests have begun to experience the exact opposite.

However, it turns out that some farmers are spending more for these special seeds while harvesting smaller amounts than they were when using standard products. While this switch back to natural products is grounded on financial reasons as opposed to moral and ethical concerns, it is comforting to know that consumers may be able to start eating more foods that haven’t been genetically modified.

The reality is that genetically modified seeds have not been tested to the degree that would make them a safe and suitable alternative to simply letting Mother Nature do what she does best. And, converting our vast farmland to produce crops that originated in corporate research labs is something that has made a lot of people nervous. Couple this with the fact that the folks who create altered seeds are fighting tooth and nail to prevent crops from being labeled as being altered, and it is easy to see why consumers are skeptical about ingesting these products.

It is indeed good news that farmers and governments around the world are taking a step back and examining the benefits of switching to genetically modified crops. Incorporating these products into the global food supply could spell disaster to a degree that has never been experienced if something goes wrong. However, until these cautionary steps are taken for the right reasons, none of us are really out of the woods and completely safe.

The best solution to ensuring a safe and nutritious food supply is to plant, grow, harvest and consume products that have not been altered or modified unless they have been proven to be safe. Not only that, but it is very difficult to trust our health and well-being to companies who have a notorious reputation for pursuing profits ahead of what is in the best interests of humanity as a whole. This is something that hardly gets any media attention, yet it impacts billions of people on the planet.

Take every step possible to consume natural and organic products that have not been genetically altered. Ideally, you should try and grow as much as you can in order to maintain control of what comes from the ground and into your digestive system. However, this is not always the most practical or realistic option, and spending a little extra money to purchase products from farmers that you trust will go a long way to ensure that your food is safe.

It is still unbelievable that something as basic and fundamental as fruits and veggies are the target of modifications that can alter their nutritional content as well as how they interact with our bodies. Yet, this the reality that citizens around the world are facing, and many simply do not know about and appreciate the magnitude of this threat. Support these farmers who have decided to grow crops the old fashioned way, and give yourself the peace of mind that what you are eating is indeed something that Mother Nature intended you to consume.

Maybe there will be a time when genetically modified products are indeed healthy, safe and just as good as their all natural variants. However, it is not worth taking chances until real controls are in place to ensure that these foods are truly fit for human and animal consumption. Always remember that it is our responsibility to control what enters our bodies, and it is up to us to consciously decide to make a concerted effort to resist altered foods at all costs.
