Balancing Prepping With Real Life

It’s really easy to get sucked into the world of prepping, letting it consume every waking moment of your day. However, it’s important to keep perspective and live a normal life as you get ready for the unexpected. There’s a good chance that all of us will encounter some kind of monumental catastrophe in our lifetime. But, there’s also the chance that none of us will feel the effects of a major emergency. Being prepared means being ready when the call to action comes. It means having the skill, tools and resources available that will get you and your family through the problem.

However, preparing should not replace daily obligations, the needs of your family or rob you of the ability to live a rich, happy and full life. Keeping perspective will not only help you to have a more balanced life, but it will also help your relationships and establish a foundation of maturity that is essential to have during a crisis.

Take care of business.

Go to work, save money, live frugally and pursue security. However, always make sure that you have enough set aside, along with necessary skills, in order to switch gears in a moment’s notice. Go to ball games, help your kid build a bike or take them to the park. Don’t get caught up in the constant fear-mongering that robs so many people of their peace and joy.

It’s one thing to look at world events with a skeptical and critical eye and interpret the signs of the times. It’s prudent to accept that we are all living on thin ice, and it’s only a matter of time before something gives and we all get transported into a different way of life. However, preparing needs to be balanced with normalcy. And, I don’t think that these two things are mutually exclusive. I think you can accomplish both with little difficulty.

There are lots of kits, programs and books out there that can help you to accomplish your goals.

But, you may end up missing the forest for the trees

Balance your time.

You can always think of what you need and what you will do during an emergency. But, the house still needs to be painted and the kids still need to be in school. Make sure that you are not becoming consumed with disaster preparation, and that you allow time for life. Preparing for disaster does involve an accumulation of knowledge as well as resources, but that preparation shouldn’t keep you from helping the kids with their homework or going out with your friends.

The whole idea behind preparing for the future is to be ready for the unexpected. It is to know that you have at least a fighting chance to overcome difficult challenges as they arise. There are lots of kits, programs and books out there that can help you to accomplish your goals. But, you may end up missing the forest for the trees if all you think about and all you do is directed towards your prepping activities.

Finding the right balance can be a challenge. However, the ultimate aim should be that you don’t neglect your family and responsibilities while you prepare for the worst.
