4 Reasons Why Rice is a Food Storage MUST!

4 Reasons Why Rice is a Food Storage MUST!

Advantages over Wheat

Rice is a far better alternative to wheat-based products for a number of reasons.  First, it produces more and longer-lasting energy.  Try it for yourself.  Take a serving of plain, cooked rice and see how long the carbohydrate boost lasts when compared to bread.  It is also easier to prepare as opposed to making wheat-based products.  You don’t need to bake or mix it with other ingredients in order to have a palatable meal.  Finally, it is easier to grow, and you can harvest more per square foot than wheat.

It’s Healthy

Rice contains a number of nutrients that are also found in wheat, but there seems to be more packed into each grain.  Rice is also gluten-free, and it makes for an ideal alternative for those who have allergies.  Rice is good for the heart, can lower blood-pressure, improve stamina, aids in digestion, and helps the body to fight all sorts of diseases.

You can get many nutritional benefits from white as well as whole grain rice.  However, whole grain rice includes parts of the outer layer and bran, and this provides a significant boost to its overall nutritional value.  However, whole grain rice is also more chewy and hearty, and this doesn’t appeal to everyone.  The good news is that you can just eat a little bit more white rice to offset these nutritional losses and enjoy the same benefits.

It’s Easy to Store and Prepare

Rice can be stored for decades if it is packaged properly and kept free from insects or rodents.  It resists mold from moisture, doesn’t lose its nutritional value and can be scooped out and cooked on-demand as long as you have boiling water or steam.  Some varieties are also heartier than others, so you can also choose products based on your location and storage system.

It’s Inexpensive

Rice prices have plummeted by more than 30% over the past few years, and buying it in bulk will only cost you pennies on the dollar.  It is also cheaper to grow and harvest rice than wheat because you don’t need a lot of land or resources to produce a good-sized crop.  The bottom line is that you can easily load up on rice without breaking the bank and significantly enhance your food security during a crisis.

Take some time to explore your options when it comes to finding the right variety for your local climate and storage capabilities.  One thing is for certain, altering weather patterns and political instability have the potential to disrupt supplies and send prices soaring.  Get a few sacks of rice and keep them on hand so that if and when you need this food source, it will be at your fingertips.
